The impact of climate change

Infographics to illustrate the impact of climate change on the Canton of Lucerne

To illustrate the impact of climate change on the Canton of Lucerne for a broad audience, I created together with the information design team at EBP a series of infographics. These infographics are based on an official climate-protection status report and various climate scenarios developed by experts for 2018.

The aim of the project is to make the complex subject matter more accessible and thereby encourage greater public engagement with the issues related to climate change. Therefore we created Lucerne-specific infographics as a means of communicating more directly with Lucerne’s residents. The infographics illustrate the impact of climate change in relation to prominent locations and that address both the risks and opportunities. Each infographic covers two scenarios in comparison to the so called “norm period” from 1981-2010: Change with consistent climate protection (middle pilar) and change without global climate protection (right pilar). Both scenarios were calculated for 2060 and  2085.

The first infographic shows the effects of temperature rise for Lucerne’s mount Pilatus and the zero degree level in winter as well as the estimated days with fresh snow and days where temperature is not rising above zero degrees.
The second infographic shows the effects of hot summers, increasing heat waves and explains the hotspot-effect in cities.
The third infographic shows the effects of a drop in rain fall during summer months for Lucerne’s agriculture. The infographic shows as well the estimated days without rainfall in a row.
The fourth infographic shows the effects of increasing heavy rains and mud flows.
